Buying Wheels for your Jeep Wrangler

In this guide we are going to cover what size wheel and tire combinations you can run from stock applications to adding a lift kit to your wrangler to clear larger tire sizes. Lets get started with listing the factory wheel dimensions and offsets for the latest wrangler generations.

Please note that the Jeep Wrangler comes in a wide variety of trim levels and factory added options, this table is a general guide to fitting tires and wheels, if you have a Rubicon trim level for instance, you will be able to fit a larger tire than a sport model wrangler. Sport Model Wranglers also have different size brake systems which allows a 16" diameter. We recommend measuring before ordering a wheel smaller than 17" or your factory wheel size.

Wrangler JK & JL Wheels: Stock Suspension or No Lift

The best fitment for a stock Jeep, in most cases is where the wheel is sitting just outside the fender flare, the chart below is sizes specifically for the wheel to sit at this position. Anything beyond these sizes will require special modifications such as a lift kit and fender modifications.

Wrangler JK & JL Wheels : Leveling Kit or Lift up to 2”

Adding a leveling kit to your Wrangler will increase its ability to accept a 35” tire and still have room to flex, or articulate for those who may find themselves off the road occasionally. The offsets tend to stay the same with stock and lifted applications, adding a lift kit will solve clearance issues on larger tire setups.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does offset and backspacing mean?

Backspace and offset determine the position of the wheel and tire on the vehicle.  Wheel positions vary based on the application. Correct backspace & offset eliminate clearance issues with fenders, brakes, struts or other possible obstructions. Some applications will require modification to your Jeep such as a lift kit. A good rule of thumb for Wranglers is 4.5" or more backspacing, that allows clearance for 13.5 Wide tires, and steers clear of any suspension components.

Besides Wheels and Tires what else will I need to install aftermarket wheels and oversized tires?

    • Lug Nuts- Your Factory Lug Nuts that hold your wheels on will not seat correctly on aftermarket wheels. These can be added on with any package in your shopping cart.
    • Tire Pressure Sensors (TPMS)- Your Jeep Wrangler likely has tire pressure sensors installed already, you can choose to have those removed at time of install and transfer them over to your new wheels, or you can purchase a set at checkout to be installed and programmed.
    • Wrangler Spare Tire Carrier- If your Jeep now has a 35" tire or larger on the back, it will not allow the tire to clear the bumper. This can be solved many different ways but the most cost effective way is to install a tire carrier.

Do you mount and balance wheel and tire packages before shipping them out?

Please note that mounted wheel and tire packages are non-returnable, and that shipping time is typically 3 weeks to arrive from order date. Pick any combination of wheels and tires listed as a package and receive free mounting, balancing and shipping.

Can I fit JK wheels on my JL?

The answer is, YES! Both Wrangler generations come with a 5x127 (5x5) bolt pattern, and they share the same wheel diameter options from 16-20” with a 71.5mm bore size and identical wheel offsets. One thing to remember is that the difference between JL and JK wheels are your wheel lug nuts, they are different, and you can easily pick up a set of lug nuts to fit your model.

So, what aftermarket wheels fit my Jeep Wrangler?

Lucky for you, we have done all the hard work of researching the perfect fitment, knowing what fits is half the battle, once you have determined what size works for you and your driving purposes, then you can just get lost for hours trying to find the best style of wheel, which is the fun part right?

  • Quick Tip- A 17” Wheel will give you the most tire options out in the industry while also providing a great ride quality and road manners.
